My earliest experience was 12 years ago when i decided for the first time that I wanted to do live. I spoke with my manager, because I was well known as a DJ, and he said if you want to make it live you have to clear off the turn tables and make it clear that there will be 'two Laurents', in a way. First will be a DJ with turntables and a mixer and if you want to make it as a musician there will be the live act where you should start working with musicians. What is the biggest difference between going on tour as Laurent Garnier and going on tour with L.B.S.? The biggest difference? for me there is no difference. When we play live we are locked into a certain time and we can't play any longer than that - around an hour or so. When you have Jazz musicians this is difficult as a if improvised and hard to fit in that space... It's like having a really fast car and now being allowed to go as fast as it can go. With lbs i can take the music where i want to take it. How do Benjamin, Scan X and you prepare the L.B.S. sets? What is the biggest challenge? We don't prepare, we never rehearse, once before the first gig but that was it.. we dont want to rehearse.every gig is different, every night we create something special. What was your best L.B.S: gig in 2010 year and why? we havent done that many - maybe 15 I think. Funnily enough they have all been pretty amazing. I have been very lucky. Panorama Bar was very special - we played very late in the morning and at one point we felt we had completely lost touch with time and it didnt matter. As a DJ you watch time, you dont play the same records at 5am as you would at 2am... when you play 10 or 11 in the morning at one point you lose your sense of time and you can do anything you want. we played a 40 minute version of 'gnanmankoudji' and it was just perfect. we did an amazing show at the rex, leon, austria, london. brighton.. all of them! What are your plans for 2011, will there be a new Laurent Garnier record from you? LBS is the next thing for me. record and make music from that... I've been scoring music for contemporary dance also and working on music for a film... LBS is the main thing though.
